Hyderabad: HYDRAA removed seven illegal borewells in Tellapur municipality limits of Sangareddy district during a major operation on Monday. The agency also demolished six large water storage tanks and seized tankers used to transport groundwater for sale.
Officials carried out the operation at two separate locations in Tellapur. They removed the seven borewells along with their pipes and filled the boreholes. In addition, they demolished six large water sumps built to store water.
HYDRAA also seized the tankers involved in the illegal water trade. Furthermore, officials registered cases against the owners concerned.
Illegal borewells in Tellapur targeted to protect groundwater
Officials said the operation aimed to prevent groundwater depletion and protect local residents from water shortages. The action followed complaints from residents of several colonies and gated communities.
Residents had raised concerns over water tankers travelling at high speeds and driving recklessly. They said the vehicles had caused accidents and created safety risks in residential areas.
Following the operation, local residents welcomed HYDRAA’s intervention. They said the action had eased their concerns about tanker-related dangers. However, they also urged authorities to completely stop illegal water extraction near lakes and ponds.
Meanwhile, HYDRAA officials warned that they would continue monitoring unauthorised borewells. They also said operators involved in illegal activities would face strict action.
