HYDRAA cracks down on lake encroachments, illegal park use, and vows nala restoration

Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Saturday took strong action against HYDRAA lake encroachments and illegal use of public park lands. He also directed officials to prepare restoration plans for the historic Bulkapur nala, which channels stormwater to Hussainsagar.

During surprise field inspections, he warned violators of strict legal consequences and emphasised the importance of protecting natural water bodies and public spaces. Notably, HYDRAA lake encroachments have been a key focus of recent enforcement actions.

Soil dumping in lakes triggers action at Melacheruvu, Gandipet

Following complaints, the commissioner visited Melacheruvu in Tellapur and Gandipet lake. He found unauthorised soil dumping within the Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zones. At Melacheruvu, Ranganath ordered Raju Yadav to remove the dumped soil immediately, warning of enforcement if delayed. HYDRAA lake encroachments continue to be monitored at these sites.

At Gandipet, he directed Dr. Khurshid to clear the soil within 48 hours. Upon request, he granted an additional 24-hour extension but cautioned that altering lake boundaries would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Fencing will be installed around all lakes. This is to prevent further HYDRAA lake encroachments.

Illegal structures removed from Jubilee Hills park

In Jubilee Hills Circle-36, HYDRAA and GHMC teams cleared unauthorised structures built on a two-acre public park along Road No. 32. Acting on media reports, Ranganath inspected the site. He found sheds and gates illegally erected by two adjacent homeowners for personal use.

He ordered immediate removal of the encroachments and directed officials to construct a perimeter wall. A central entrance will also be built to ensure free access for the public. Locals welcomed the swift demolition.

Ranganath also inspected parts of the Bulkapur nala in Manikonda, where he found growing encroachments. The nala, which originates in Shankarpalli’s Bulkapur lake, carries rainwater through Kokapet, Narsingi, Puppalaguda, Manikonda, Dargah, Shaikpet, Tolichowki, and several other localities. Eventually, it reaches Hussainsagar.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive restoration plan. He stated that reviving the nala would significantly improve groundwater levels across western Hyderabad.
