Hyderabad: Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRA) has asked citizens to actively report any encroachments on lakes and stormwater drains across Hyderabad, warning that unchecked obstructions are worsening the city’s flood vulnerability during monsoon.
A WhatsApp helpline—8712406899—has been activated for the public to send photos, videos, and precise locations of encroachments. HYDRA said submissions can also be made via its official ‘Commissioner HYDRA’ accounts on X, Instagram, and Facebook.
In emergencies, citizens may contact Commissioner A.V. Ranganath directly at 7207923085.
As part of its larger flood-prevention strategy, HYDRA has launched restoration work on six lakes under a phased revival plan. The initiative aims to ensure that rainwater is diverted into water bodies rather than flooding homes and streets.
HYDRA said many of Hyderabad’s lakes and drains have been encroached upon, and this is directly contributing to recurring waterlogging. The civic body called on residents to join its effort in preserving these assets.
The agency said lake and nala protection is a shared responsibility and warned that without public involvement, the damage would escalate.
