Hyderabad rains: Minister reviews civic action with officials

Hyderabad: Telangana Minister and Hyderabad in-charge Ponnam Prabhakar on Friday held a teleconference with officials from GHMC, HMWS&SB, police, traffic, revenue, electricity and health departments. The review came in the wake of heavy rains lashing the city over the past three days.

Prabhakar instructed officials to remain alert as the Meteorological Department warned of more heavy rains in the next three days. He asked them to respond immediately to complaints from residents of low-lying areas.

The minister directed officials to publicise toll-free helpline numbers through television and social media. He asked authorities to provide all basic amenities in rehabilitation centres. At railway underbridges, police must regulate traffic and guide motorists. GHMC teams must constantly monitor manholes and floodwater points during heavy rains.

Prabhakar stressed caution near electricity poles and live wires. He asked departments to send alert messages through mobile networks whenever heavy rains were forecast. He urged citizens to step out only in emergencies during intense downpours.

On drinking water, the minister directed officials to check quality before supply and ensure it remained free from contamination. He warned citizens against opening manhole covers under any circumstances. He also asked GHMC, police and other civic departments to coordinate closely.
