Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand on Friday held a citywide review meeting on traffic operations, addressing congestion, enforcement, and upcoming strategies.
Senior traffic officers including Inspectors, SIs, ACPs, DCPs B.K. Rahul Hegde, Ashok Kumar, R. Venkateswarlu, and Joint CP Traffic D. Joel Davis attended the session. Anand shared updates and future plans with traffic enforcement staff.
He noted a rise in average vehicle speed in the city from 17–18 kmph last year to 24–25 kmph at present, attributing it to the department’s enforcement drives and road management. He acknowledged the growing pressure from around 1,600 new vehicles added daily across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates, which now see a combined total of 91 lakh vehicles on the roads each day.
Anand confirmed the continuation of ‘Operation Rope’ with more scientific methods and praised recent efforts to manage VIP movement without prolonged traffic halts, in line with the Chief Minister’s instructions.
Currently, 80% of the city’s traffic signals are on automated mode. Anand said this had helped improve flow and reduce stoppages.
On enforcement, the focus has shifted from issuing a large number of fines to ensuring meaningful penalties. He claimed this had led to a reduction in overall violations.
Hyderabad Police are using drone surveillance and technical inputs from Google to track traffic congestion in real time. In collaboration with owners of high-rise buildings, 25 ‘Eagle View’ cameras are being installed for overhead monitoring.
Due to personnel shortages, the department is rolling out a new ‘Traffic Marshal’ system under CSR funding. Corporates will sponsor marshals who will receive police training and be deployed for traffic management.
The commissioner also highlighted the effective performance of transgender traffic assistants and stated that the government had been briefed on expanding their deployment.
Coordination is underway with HYDRA and GHMC for monsoon preparedness. Anand added that private travel buses were causing major disruptions and a meeting with operators will be held shortly to address the issue.
