Hyderabad: ₹6.9 lakh worth Chinese manjha seized; one arrested

Hyderabad: Chinese manjha enforcement intensified after the Commissioner’s Task Force, West Zone, seized banned kite string worth ₹6.9 lakh and arrested one person in the city.

Acting on credible information, the West Zone Task Force apprehended Mohd Shazaib, 42, at Sadhu Kite Shop in Kalapathar. Police booked the case under the limits of Kalapather Police Station.

During the operation, officers seized 345 bobbins of banned synthetic nylon-coated Chinese manjha. The seized material carried the brand name Monofil Gold. Police estimated its market value at ₹6.9 lakh.

Investigators said the accused procured the banned manjha through an associate based in Haryana. He allegedly sold each bobbin in Hyderabad for ₹2,000 to make illegal gains.

Chinese manjha ban enforced under the Environment Protection Act

Police said the Telangana government imposed a complete ban on procuring, stocking, selling, and using Chinese manjha. Authorities enforced the prohibition under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

Officials warned that violations attract imprisonment of up to five years. Offenders may also face a fine of up to ₹1 lakh or both.

Therefore, police stressed that the ban aimed to prevent serious injuries and fatalities caused by the sharp nylon-coated string. Officials cited repeated incidents involving pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, and birds.

After the arrest, police handed over the accused and seized material to the Station House Officer of Kalapather police station for further investigation. The operation took place under the supervision of Inspector Ch Yadender and Sub-Inspector of Police G Sandeep Reddy of the West Zone Task Force.

Finally, police issued a public advisory urging citizens to stay away from Chinese manjha. They also asked people to report illegal sales or use immediately to protect human lives and birds.
