Harish Rao questions Musi rejuvenation cost, flags displacement concerns in Assembly

Hyderabad: BRS MLA Harish Rao on Friday questioned the Congress government over the cost and funding of the Musi rejuvenation project during Question Hour in the Telangana Assembly.

Speaking on the second day of the session, Harish Rao sought clarity on how much the government planned to spend on Musi rejuvenation and where the funds would come from. He pointed out that ministers had quoted varying figures, including ₹1 lakh crore and ₹1.5 lakh crore. Questioning these contradictions, he asked the government to disclose the exact project cost. He also demanded that the original estimated expenditure for Musi beautification be placed on record.

Harish Rao raises concerns on rehabilitation and water sourcing

Turning to displacement, Harish Rao asked how many houses authorities had demolished so far for the Musi project. He questioned whether the government had provided houses to all displaced families. He also sought details on the extent of private land acquisition.

Referring to the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, Harish Rao said displaced families were entitled to ₹14.5 lakh as compensation. He added that each family should also receive a 200-square-yard house site. He questioned whether the government had allotted double-bedroom houses built during the tenure of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

On water sourcing, Harish Rao questioned the government’s claim of bringing water into the Musi. He demanded clarity on the source of 2.5 TMC of Godavari water. He asked whether the supply would come from Mallanna Sagar or from another source.

Recalling earlier measures, Harish Rao said the previous BRS government constructed over 30 sewage treatment plants to stop sewage from entering the Musi. He said the government also built STPs in Vikarabad. However, he alleged that many of these facilities were not functioning now.

Raising doubts over recent Musi floods, Harish Rao asked whether officials knew the actual inflow into the twin reservoirs. He questioned whether authorities opened reservoir gates simultaneously, which led to flooding in Musi catchment areas.

Issuing a warning, Harish Rao said the BRS would oppose house demolitions carried out in the name of Musi beautification. He said the party would resist any move that displaced poor families, even if it required protests at demolition sites.
