GHMC cracks down on mosquito breeding, extends citywide sanitation blitz

Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan on Monday directed officials to intensify Anti Larval Operations (ALO) mosquito control activities across the city and extend the ongoing pre-monsoon sanitation drive. He issued the instructions during a video conference with zonal and additional commissioners and department heads.

The Commissioner expressed concern that entomology staff in various zones were being diverted from ALO duties and asked zonal and deputy commissioners to immediately ensure they resume mosquito control work. He cited increased mosquito breeding due to stagnant “gurrapu dekka” (horse dung sludge) in lakes and instructed additional commissioners of lakes and health to prepare a removal plan.

Karnan also ordered the sanitation wing to continue the citywide pre-monsoon sanitation campaign beyond the initial schedule. Specific focus was requested on leftover colonies in various wards where sanitation drives have yet to be conducted.

AC Sanitation Raghu Prasad reported that between June 3 and June 25, the sanitation team had completed special drives in 120 wards, removing 3,900 tonnes of C&D waste and 5,400 tonnes of garbage. He requested a 20-day extension from June 26 to cover pending colonies.

Karnan also reviewed progress and asked the sanitation team for detailed updates on the special drive’s status.

On legal matters, the Commissioner instructed zonal commissioners to prioritise court-related cases and send replies without delay. Each zone is to appoint a nodal officer for legal coordination. Court submissions must carry prior approval from the respective zonal commissioner and should be routed through the legal AC at the head office when required.
