Hyderabad: A 10-day monsoon sanitation drive has begun across 150 wards in Hyderabad, with GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan launching the operation to prioritise public health and monsoon preparedness.
On Tuesday, Commissioner Karnan conducted field inspections in Charminar and LB Nagar zones, overseeing on-ground execution of the drive. Sanitation workers cleared garbage from roads, colonies, and public spaces, and desilted drains to prevent water stagnation.
Anti-Mosquito Measures, Community Engagement
Entomology teams intensified fogging and anti-larval operations to control mosquito breeding. During reviews, Karnan issued instructions to improve coverage and directed staff to remain active throughout the drive.
He appealed to citizens to avoid dumping waste on streets and to use designated bins and Swachh autos. “Keeping surroundings clean is the first line of defence against monsoon diseases,” he said.
Local representatives, colony welfare associations, and residents were urged to participate actively and share responsibility for maintaining neighbourhood hygiene.
Drive Coverage and Shift Instructions
The sanitation drive will run in batches of 30 wards every two to three days, covering the entire city by August 8. Workers have been assigned morning shifts from 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Vehicles are on standby to clear waste promptly. GHMC has also directed agencies to mobilise equipment to remove construction debris (C&D waste), with action to be taken against any agency failing to provide required logistics.
Charminar Zone Review
Commissioner Karnan visited Sardar Mahal, Patherghatti, and the old bus stand areas with Charminar MLA Zulfiqar Ali, MLC Rahmat Baig, corporators, and Zonal Commissioner Venkanna.
They reviewed heritage upkeep, basic amenities, and progress on monsoon and civic works. Karnan directed officials to complete pending infrastructure upgrades quickly while preserving the zone’s historical character.
