Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified its citywide sanitation drive. It has cleared 5,641 metric tonnes of waste and construction debris from 3,613 key locations across 300 wards as of January 19. This massive operation addresses the long-standing issue of waste in Hyderabad.
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan held a WebEx review meeting with zonal and additional commissioners, engineers, and senior officials to assess the progress of the special sanitation programme. The programme began on December 29 and will run through January 31. During the meeting, the topic of effectively managing waste in Hyderabad was also discussed.
Field inspections and community awareness top agenda
Karnan directed all zonal and additional commissioners to ramp up field inspections in the remaining days of the drive to ensure maximum impact. He also stressed the need for robust public awareness campaigns, urging citizens to actively participate in cleanliness efforts. Additionally, he asked them to help turn Greater Hyderabad into a model clean city with GHMC sanitation drive. Effective management of waste in Hyderabad can only be achieved through community engagement.
The ongoing special drive includes targeted cleaning of vulnerable garbage points, flyovers, foot-over bridges, and parks. Of the total waste cleared so far, 4,243 metric tonnes comprised general garbage, while 1,398 metric tonnes were construction and demolition debris.
Zonal and deputy commissioners are overseeing the ground-level execution of the programme, which continues with full momentum across the city. In summary, the swift removal of waste in Hyderabad remains a priority for officials and citizens alike.
