GHMC to undertake city-wide special sanitation drive from Feb. 3

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will begin a city-wide special sanitation drive from February 3 to 28, covering all 300 wards daily. The drive aims to eliminate garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) and improve overall cleanliness across the city.

Following instructions from the GHMC Commissioner, officials have adopted a focused approach to clear legacy waste, solid waste, construction debris, green waste, and leftover materials from engineering and biodiversity works.

Daily operations will begin at 6:30 a.m. and proceed in phases across different urban areas.

The drive will cover neglected and high-traffic areas. These include footpaths, lakes, parks, slums, roadsides, medians, foot overbridges, flyovers, and areas near electric poles and transformers.

As part of the initiative, GHMC will:

  • Clear legacy waste from long-pending locations
  • Use special vehicles to remove construction debris
  • Convert GVPs into clean, welcoming public spaces through art, greenery, and landscaping
  • Conduct awareness programmes in schools, communities, and RWAs
  • Promote e-waste and green waste recycling through RRR centres
  • Impose spot fines for littering, public urination, and illegal dumping

Moreover, GHMC has instructed Zonal and Deputy Commissioners, sanitation engineers, UCD teams, and private contractors to coordinate efforts. Real-time monitoring and daily progress reporting are mandatory throughout the campaign.

The civic body has also appealed to residents to cooperate with field teams and participate in awareness drives. By working together, officials say Hyderabad can maintain cleaner and safer neighbourhoods in the long term.
