Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday celebrated a major milestone under the Maha Lakshmi scheme, announcing that free bus travel for women has crossed 200 crore journeys across the state.
Sharing his remarks on X, the Chief Minister described the achievement as a transformative moment for Telangana, stating that the initiative has not only reduced the financial burden on women but also contributed to their health and economic well-being.
He said the scheme had significantly increased women’s access to public transport, with female ridership on RTC buses rising from 35% to 60%.
Revanth also highlighted that the TSRTC, once burdened by debt and facing operational uncertainty, had experienced a revival because of this singular welfare measure.
Acknowledging the collective effort, he thanked RTC staff, employees, management, and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar for ensuring the scheme’s success.
“When this government took over, there was genuine fear that RTC would collapse. This single initiative reversed its fortunes and empowered women with 200 crore zero-fare journeys,” Revanth Reddy stated.
