Hyderabad: Two pedestrians were injured when an old staircase attached to the Fatehnagar flyover near Sanathnagar collapsed, sparking fresh concerns about Hyderabad’s crumbling public infrastructure.
The metal staircase, over three decades old and visibly worn, gave way while people were using it. Both injured individuals were taken to a nearby hospital and are currently under treatment.
Police believe water seepage from recent rains may have weakened the structure. Officials arrived quickly at the scene to assess the damage.
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected the site Tuesday morning. Locals told him that the staircase is especially busy on Sundays, as it provides access to the Sanathnagar weekly market. Ranganath acknowledged the risk posed by such ageing structures and ordered the immediate removal of the remnants using a JCB operated by the Disaster Response Team.
He also directed civic officials to launch a citywide audit of unstable structures, calling in civil engineers to identify and demolish anything that might pose a threat.
Local corporator Satish Goud, who visited the site, assured residents that safer, more durable staircases would be constructed soon.
