Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday launched the Solar Model Village programme at Ravinuthala in Bonakal mandal. He declared that every house in Telangana should become a solar power generation unit.
Speaking at a public meeting, Bhatti said the State government is fully funding the installation of rooftop solar panels and solar-powered agricultural pump sets. Households can use the power they generate and sell surplus units to the electricity department. This way, they can earn up to ₹5,000 annually. “Until now, we paid money to electricity companies. From now on, electricity companies will pay money to the people,” he said.
₹1,380 crore project spans 81 villages
The programme is being piloted in 81 villages, with Kodangal and Bonakal mandals seeing comprehensive implementation. Bonakal alone accounts for ₹306 crore of the ₹1,380 crore allocated under the scheme. Ravinuthala village, the launch site, is receiving ₹24 crore.
Bhatti said the initiative allows families to save around ₹14,000 annually through reduced electricity costs. Women, in particular, can use earnings from solar surplus sales for education and healthcare, improving household financial security.
Farmers, schools, and government offices to benefit
He encouraged farmers to adopt solar power on pump sets and use surplus electricity for income during non-cultivation months. Furthermore, solar sheds, he said, can serve as multi-purpose assets in fields. They provide shelter for cattle, storage for tools, and additional income.
The government also plans to install solar plants at all government schools and offices. This will reduce pollution and promote clean energy use.
Bhatti warned farmers against burning crop residue, citing serious health risks. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to turning Telangana into a solar-powered, economically empowered state.
NPDCL CMD Varun Reddy, REDCO MD Aneela, and Khammam District Collector Anudeep Durishetty accompanied Bhatti during the site inspection and inauguration.
