Delhi, January 7: The 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi will go to the polls in a single phase on 5 February, with the results scheduled for 8 February. This announcement was made by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday.
The election process, from the announcement of dates to the declaration of results, will be completed in 33 days. Compared to the 2015 and 2020 elections, this year’s schedule for voting and results is being conducted a week earlier.
In a press conference that lasted an hour and a half, CEC Rajiv Kumar spoke about the Delhi elections for only 10 minutes. A significant portion of the briefing addressed concerns raised by the opposition, including allegations of discrepancies in the voter list, deletion of specific voter groups, and questions surrounding the reliability of electronic voting machines (EVMs).
The CEC emphasised that questioning the electoral process has become a concerning trend. He stated that such practices negatively impact young voters’ trust in the system. Additionally, he pointed out that the Supreme Court has previously dismissed doubts regarding EVM reliability.
The Election Commission urged all stakeholders to approach the election process responsibly, ensuring a fair and transparent electoral exercise.
