Delhi, January 7: The Election Commission of India is set to announce the schedule for the Delhi Assembly elections on Tuesday.
A press conference is scheduled for 2 PM, during which the election dates will be revealed. Following the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct will come into force across Delhi.
The current term of the Delhi Legislative Assembly is due to end on February 23. Additionally, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar is slated to retire on February 18, making it likely that the election process will conclude before his retirement.
In 2020, the Assembly election dates were declared on January 6, with voting held in a single phase across all 70 seats on February 8. Results were announced on February 11.
During the last election, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured a sweeping victory, winning 62 out of 70 seats with 53.57% of the vote share. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gained 8 seats with 38.51% of the vote, while the Congress received 4.26% but failed to win any seats. Congress had also failed to open its account in the 2015 elections.
With the upcoming announcement, the political climate in Delhi is expected to intensify as parties prepare for the polls.
