Hyderabad: BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao marked the deeksha divas anniversary on Saturday by recalling the moment that reshaped Telangana’s political course. He posted an emotional message on X and shared a video of K. Chandrashekar Rao’s 2009 arrest in Karimnagar.
KTR wrote that November 29, 2009 changed Telangana’s direction because KCR’s hunger strike triggered events that eventually led to state formation. He said the arrest created intense public emotion and pushed the agitation into a decisive phase. He also referred to the tense situation that surrounded the incident.
Deeksha divas anniversary rooted in turning point of statehood movement
The deeksha divas anniversary traces back to KCR’s announcement of an indefinite hunger strike at Algunur near Karimnagar. Police detained him while he was travelling to the protest site and shifted him to Khammam jail. The arrest sparked widespread protests across the region.
As demonstrations intensified, political pressure mounted on the then Union government. The movement eventually forced the announcement of a separate Telangana. Because of this turning point, BRS observes November 29 every year as Deeksha Divas.
