Hyderabad: Hyderabad CP Sajjanar warned youth against filming drug-related reels in front of deities during Shivaratri and said police would register cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act) against offenders.
He expressed strong anger over youths performing stunts in the name of devotion for social media likes and views. During Maha Shivaratri, he noted, some individuals displayed narcotic substances as “divine offerings” while shooting reels. He called the act highly objectionable and offensive.
In a post on X, he said turning a sacred festival into a publicity platform amounted to insulting faith. Moreover, he added that such actions mocked a festival regarded as a path to devotion and spiritual liberation. Therefore, he said, police would not ignore such conduct.
NDPS cases will follow, says CP Sajjanar
He further warned that promoting narcotic substances for fame or thrill constituted a serious crime. Accordingly, he said police would book those involved under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Once invoked, he cautioned, the law would carry lifelong consequences.
At the same time, he advised youth not to sacrifice a bright future for momentary excitement. Instead, he urged them to use social media for creativity and constructive engagement. Otherwise, he said, turning it into a gateway for addiction would cause lasting damage.
Additionally, he asked youngsters to recognise the harm caused by reckless reels made on the streets. In conclusion, he made it clear that police would not tolerate acts that insult religion or endanger society and would take strict legal action against those responsible.
