Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy attended a thanksgiving meeting organised by the Madiga Community Employees Coordination Committee at Shilpakala Vedika in Hyderabad.
Members of the Madiga employees’ group thanked the chief minister for extending legal backing to Scheduled Caste sub-categorisation.
Addressing the gathering, Revanth Reddy said the Madiga community had waged a long struggle for SC sub-categorisation. Several people had even lost their lives during the movement, he added.
The chief minister said he had closely observed the issue for many years and supported the demand from the beginning. He recalled that he was once expelled from the Assembly for raising the issue.
Despite pressure, he said he continued to stand with those demanding justice for the Madiga community.
Revanth Reddy speaks on SC sub-categorisation and welfare
Revanth Reddy said India’s Supreme Court verdict paved the way for states to act on SC sub-categorisation. Telangana, he said, became the first state to announce steps following the judgment.
He maintained that justice was on the side of the Madiga community and reiterated his commitment to the issue.
The chief minister also referred to the political change in the state and said people collectively worked to bring down the previous government led by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi.
According to him, the present government came to power through commitment rather than mere promises.
Revanth Reddy also spoke about the government’s focus on education. He said he personally took charge of the education portfolio to ensure access to education for poor families.
The government introduced the breakfast scheme in schools and plans to provide kits with school bags and other materials, he said.
Revanth Reddy said the aim was to ensure that poverty does not prevent any child from continuing education.
During his address, he also referred to characters from the epic Mahabharata. He described Karna and Barbarika as his favourite characters.
He said the government had tried to stand with weaker sections in the same spirit.
The chief minister acknowledged that the state currently faces financial constraints. Even so, he said the government would work to provide better education and political opportunities for the Madiga community.
Ministers Damodar Rajanarsimha and Adluri Laxman Kumar also attended the meeting.
