Hyderabad: City Police Commissioner C.V. Sajjanar on Saturday explained the Chaderghat shooting incident, confirming that rowdy-sheeter Umar sustained injuries after he attacked officers during a mobile phone snatching attempt.
The Commissioner visited the crime scene at Victoria Grounds in Chaderghat and briefed the media. He said Umar, a repeat offender from Kalapathar with 25 prior cases, tried to snatch a mobile phone and resisted arrest violently.
Chaderghat shooting incident: DCP fires after knife attack
While returning from a departmental meeting, DCP Chaitanya Kumar saw two men stealing phones near Victoria Playground. He immediately alerted his gunman and moved to intercept them. However, one of the suspects pulled out a knife and charged at the officer.
As the gunman tried to intervene, he lost balance and fell during the scuffle. To prevent further harm, DCP Chaitanya grabbed the weapon and fired three rounds. The bullets struck Umar in the chest and back.
Police rushed him to Care Hospital in Banjara Hills for treatment. Meanwhile, the second suspect escaped. A search operation is underway to locate him.
Commissioner Sajjanar confirmed that Umar features on the city’s most-wanted list and has a rowdy-sheet registered against him. A police gunman suffered minor injuries in the incident, but his condition remains stable. Other officers at the scene were unharmed.
