Hyderabad: A 32-year-old man went missing in the Musi River near Chaderghat on Thursday evening, after he reportedly jumped into the waters while drunk. Police said the man missing was identified as Mohammed Saleem, a daily wage worker from Shankarnagar.
According to eyewitnesses, Saleem appeared heavily intoxicated when he arrived near the Hanuman temple at Shankarnagar. Before leaping into the river, he announced that he would swim across to the other side. Locals said he ignored repeated warnings not to enter the water, especially since the Musi was in spate due to recent rains.
Chaderghat man missing in Musi river
As soon as he entered the water, the strong current pulled him into a deep stretch of the river. Within moments, he was swept away. Alarmed residents immediately informed the Chaderghat police. Inspector Brahma Murari, along with his staff, rushed to the spot and coordinated with the Disaster Response Force (DRF) to launch a search operation.
Police teams and DRF divers searched the riverbanks with boats and rescue gear for several hours. However, they were unable to trace the man missing in the Musi River. Officials later said the high flood flow may have carried him downstream, making the search more challenging.
Search to continue
The police said the search operation would continue on Friday morning with expanded deployment of boats and additional rescue teams. Authorities also alerted downstream police stations to watch for any signs of the body along the river course.
Meanwhile, residents of Shankarnagar gathered near the spot, expressing shock over the incident. They said Saleem had been struggling with alcoholism for some time and often created disturbances in the neighbourhood.
Police urged people not to enter the Musi River during floods under any circumstances, pointing out that strong undercurrents could endanger lives even in shallow stretches.
