CCS special crime team arrests two in illegal SIM activation case

Hyderabad: The Special Crime Team of the Central Crime Station arrested two persons in Hyderabad for their involvement in an illegal SIM activation racket and seized 184 unlawfully activated SIM cards along with four mobile phones.

Acting on credible information, the team conducted a targeted operation and took the suspects into custody. During the search, officers recovered 150 Airtel SIM cards and 34 Jio SIM cards that had been activated illegally. Police said the seizure formed part of an ongoing crackdown on misuse of telecom services.

Police identified the accused as Nanevath Dinesh Kumar Naik (22) and Parnapally Sai Pradeep (24), both residents of Cuddapah district in Andhra Pradesh. Investigators said that other aspects of the operation were still under verification.

Illegal SIM activation racket exposed by CCS team

According to police, the accused ran a SIM distribution and promoter business in Andhra Pradesh. However, they illegally activated Airtel SIM cards by misusing customers’ KYC details and fingerprints. Investigators said the customers had visited their outlet to purchase Vodafone-Idea SIM cards and were unaware of the misuse.

After activation, the accused transported the illegally activated SIM cards to Hyderabad. They then sold the SIMs at higher prices to buyers seeking anonymous connections. Police stated that such practices posed significant risks to public safety and cybersecurity.

Meanwhile, the CCS issued a public advisory urging citizens to remain cautious while purchasing SIM cards or updating KYC details. Officials advised people to avail such services only at authorised network stores or centres. They added that further investigation was underway to identify buyers and possible links to larger networks.
