BRS protests Banakacherla project in Rajya Sabha, motion rejected

Hyderabad: The BRS party on Wednesday demanded an urgent debate in the Rajya Sabha over the Godavari-Banakacherla project. They allege the Andhra Pradesh scheme threatens Telangana’s water rights and breaches inter-state water-sharing norms.

BRS Parliamentary leader K.R. Suresh Reddy and MP Divakonda Damodar Rao submitted an adjournment motion to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh. They asked the House to suspend its agenda and debate the Banakacherla issue immediately. The motion, however, was rejected.

The party claims the Godavari project would divert Telangana water, disrupting irrigation and affecting farming communities. BRS MPs accused the Congress-led state government of ignoring the matter and staying silent.

They also targeted Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, alleging he is prioritising political convenience over Telangana’s interests to appease Andhra Pradesh leaders.

BRS reaffirmed its long-standing opposition to the Banakacherla project. It pledged to keep raising the issue in Parliament and public forums to protect Telangana’s water share and safeguard farmers’ future.
