Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Saturday announced a protest at the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) office, accusing the Congress-led state government of failing to protect Telangana’s Krishna water allocation from overuse by Andhra Pradesh.
Former Minister and BRS Legislature Party Deputy Floor Leader T. Harish Rao said Andhra Pradesh had already drawn nearly 664 TMC of Krishna water during the current water year, approaching 80% of the total share under the temporary 66:34 arrangement. In contrast, Telangana has utilised only around 20% of its entitlement, despite escalating summer water demands.
Rao, addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan, stated that Andhra Pradesh had exceeded its allocated quota by January 29, 2026. He warned that usage would breach limits further within days unless immediate corrective action was taken. He revealed that Telangana’s Irrigation Department had requested an urgent KRMB meeting to halt further diversions.
BRS faults state govt inaction on Krishna water allocation
Rao criticised the state government’s inaction, pointing to the delay in appointing an Engineer-in-Chief and the failure to demand an emergency Apex Council meeting on the issue. He alleged discrepancies between Telangana officials’ internal data and KRMB’s records, raising concerns over transparency and monitoring.
He warned that unchecked water diversion could severely affect irrigation and drinking water supply in Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, and Ranga Reddy districts. “The Congress government has not responded with urgency despite the gravity of the situation,” he said.
The BRS leader announced that the party would escalate its agitation if the situation persisted. He said the BRS would raise the matter in Parliament and seek intervention from Union Ministers to safeguard Telangana’s rights.
