BRS complaint against MP Kavya over ex-officio eligibility

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi filed a complaint with the State Election Commission over MP Kavya ex-officio eligibility in Thorrur municipality.

The party alleged that Kadiyam Kavya had illegally registered as an ex-officio member in two local bodies, violating established rules. The complaint followed escalating disputes surrounding the election of the chairperson and vice-chairperson in Thorrur municipality.

According to BRS leaders, Kavya first took oath as a Member of Parliament. She was also sworn in as an ex-officio member of the Warangal Municipal Corporation. Subsequently, she was registered as an ex-officio member in Thorrur municipality as well.

The BRS contended that such dual registration contravened regulations governing ex-officio membership. Therefore, it urged the SEC to initiate stringent action.

Dispute over MP Kavya ex-officio eligibility in Thorrur

After filing the complaint, BRS legal cell member Lalitha Reddy addressed the media. She stated that the law mandated a 30-day notification period for such registrations.

“Contrarily, the process was expedited within two days, enabling her to cast her vote. This situation is legally untenable,” Reddy said.

The controversy emerged amid closely contested municipal results in Thorrur. In the recent elections, BRS won 9 of the 16 wards. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress secured 7 wards.

However, the margin narrowed when ex-officio votes of the local MLA and MP were taken into account. As a result, the contest for the chairperson and vice-chairperson posts became evenly poised.

BRS leaders alleged that Kavya’s registration was hastened due to political pressure. They claimed that officials had initially raised objections before the process was cleared.

The party maintained that MP Kavya ex-officio eligibility required strict scrutiny under electoral norms. It further requested the SEC to examine whether due procedure had been followed.

The SEC had not publicly responded to the complaint at the time of filing. Meanwhile, the dispute continued to cast uncertainty over the leadership election in Thorrur municipality.
