Hyderabad: BJP state president N. Ramchander Rao said the party strongly opposes religion-based quotas and will resist their inclusion in the Telangana government’s proposed 42% reservations for backward classes.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Ramchander Rao said the BJP supports the 42% quota for backward castes but alleged that the Congress government is misleading the public by including Muslim reservations under the same bill. “This will lead to gross injustice to other BC communities,” he said.
Ramchander Rao argued that the Congress promise is deceptive and constitutionally unfeasible, as the proposed quota cannot be placed under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. He said the BJP will not tolerate any injustice to non-Muslim BCs and will not allow religion-based reservations under any circumstances.
He added that the BJP’s central leadership and the Union government share the same position, maintaining that reservations must not be granted on religious grounds.
Ramchander Rao said the party will take all necessary steps to ensure justice for BCs in Telangana.
On internal disputes within the BJP, Ramchander Rao addressed the ongoing rift between senior leaders Bandi Sanjay and E. Rajender, calling it an internal matter. He said the party high command would resolve the issue. “Such differences are common in all political parties,” he added, citing friction between Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy in Congress and between K.T. Rama Rao and K. Kavitha in BRS.
