BJP promises party-wise BC reservations in local polls

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N. Ramachandra Rao on Tuesday said the party would ensure party-wise BC reservations in upcoming local body elections. He promised greater representation for Backward Classes in Panchayat bodies.

Addressing the media, Rao criticised the Congress-led State government for delaying the elections. He said the polls had not been held even 21 months after Sarpanch terms expired. Due to this delay, nearly ₹4,000 crore from the 15th Finance Commission had remained unused. These funds could not be released without elected local bodies, he explained.

Rao accused the Congress of misleading BC voters during the previous Assembly election. The party had promised 42% reservations through its BC Declaration but failed to make the required legal changes. He called the cabinet’s reported plan to conduct elections without constitutional quota and only offer party-level representation “unfair and deceptive.”

Rao said the BJP would carefully review candidates to guarantee adequate representation for BCs. He described this as a “fair and party-driven approach” that respects voter expectations. He also alleged that Congress used the Kamareddy Declaration only to win votes, without making any legislative effort to back it up.

Furthermore, Rao addressed internal security concerns. He referred to the Centre’s anti-Maoist operation “Kagaar,” which offers Maoists a chance to surrender by March 31, 2026. He urged them to lay down arms and join mainstream society. Otherwise, he warned, continued violence would only cause more loss of life.
