Former Uppal MLA Bandaru Rajireddy passes away; Revanth Reddy offers condolences

Hyderabad: Bandaru Rajireddy, former MLA from Uppal and a long-serving Congress leader, passed away in the early hours of Thursday after a spell of illness. He was 79. The end came at his home in Hyderabad, his family confirmed. Funeral arrangements are being made, and the last rites are expected to take place on Friday.

Rajireddy, born in 1945 in Nacharam, was known for keeping things simple. He studied up to Class 9 at the Zilla Parishad school in Malkajgiri before entering public life. For those who knew him, he wasn’t just a politician he was a steady presence in the party’s district circles, especially in what is now Ranga Reddy district.

His big break came in the 2009 elections, when he won the Uppal seat on a Congress ticket, defeating TRS’s Muthireddy Yadagiri Reddy with a margin of more than 28,000 votes. People in Uppal still recall how approachable he was not one to avoid street-level meetings or local disputes. He served as a TTD Board member in 2012, adding religious service to his political record.

In 2014, Rajireddy stepped back from contesting and instead pushed his brother, Bandaru Lakshma Reddy, to run from Uppal. Though Lakshma Reddy lost that year, he later switched to BRS and won the same seat in 2023.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed sorrow at the news. “Rajireddy garu always stayed rooted. He helped the Congress stay grounded in Uppal during testing times,” he said in a message.

Several Congress veterans visited the family on Thursday. Many of them remembered Rajireddy as a quiet worker someone who believed more in action than in publicity.
