AMROHA: In a highly unusual turn of events, a 30-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district married an 18-year-old Class 12 student after divorcing her second husband and converting to Hinduism.
The woman, Shabnam, a resident of Saidanwala, had previously been married twice. Her first marriage was to a man from Meerut, which ended in divorce. She then married Taufeeq, a local resident, but in 2011, he became physically disabled following a road accident.
Shabnam, who is the mother of three children, recently fell in love with Shiv, an 18-year-old student currently studying in Class 12. The couple decided to marry, and on April 4, she divorced her second husband, Taufeeq. Subsequently, she converted to Hinduism and changed her name to Shivani.
On Wednesday, Shivani and Shiv were married at a local temple following Hindu rituals.
Shiv’s father, Dataram Singh, welcomed the marriage and stated that he supported his son’s decision. He told the media that if the couple is happy, their family is happy too. He added that all they wished for was a peaceful life for the newlyweds.
However, the marriage has attracted the attention of the authorities, as Uttar Pradesh currently has a law prohibiting religious conversion for the sole purpose of marriage. A senior police official confirmed that the matter is under review.
