Hyderabad: Telangana Textiles Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has instructed officials to organise large-scale National Handloom Day celebrations on August 7. He said the state’s traditional weaves deserve national visibility and global recognition.
Reviewing department programmes at the Secretariat on Saturday, he stressed that handloom products like Gadwala, Narayanpet, and Pochampally Ikkat still hold market value. He noted that young consumers continue to support handmade textiles.
The Minister asked handloom societies to showcase these iconic weaves in upcoming exhibitions. He directed them to produce quality items that meet market trends and pricing.
He also called for faster selection and payment under the Handloom Loan Waiver Scheme. “Transfer funds to beneficiary accounts without delay,” he said.
Further, Tummala reviewed saree production under the Indira Kranti Mahila Shakti Scheme. He instructed officials to speed up orders from various departments so that weavers continue to get steady work.
He noted that the government has ensured sustained employment by placing bulk orders for empowerment sarees and textiles.
The Minister urged full implementation of welfare programmes under the Telangana Handloom Abhayahastam scheme. These include savings, insurance, and security benefits for registered weavers.
Principal Secretary Sailaja Ramaiyer and senior department officials attended the meeting.
