TGSRTC electric bus retrofit plan targets 2,800 EVs by 2027

Hyderabad: TGSRTC electric bus retrofit programme gathered pace as the corporation moved to convert old diesel buses into electric vehicles and expand green mobility within the city.

As part of the initiative, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation awarded contracts for retrofitting 240 buses. Sai Green Mobility will convert 200 buses, while Kalyani Power Train Limited will handle 40 buses. The tenders were issued in September 2025 as part of a broader clean transport strategy.

Officials said the corporation aimed to deploy around 2,800 electric buses within the Hyderabad Outer Ring Road limits by 2027. They expect the shift to reduce air pollution as more commuters opt for public transport over private vehicles. In addition, authorities believe the plan could help lower respiratory and heart-related health issues.

Currently, 325 electric buses operate from six depots. Another 175 electric buses are scheduled to join the fleet this year. Meanwhile, charging infrastructure is expanding, with facilities planned in 19 additional depots. The corporation also plans to build 10 new depots and 10 charging centres at an estimated cost of Rs.392 crore.

TGSRTC electric bus retrofit strengthens charging network

A diesel bus from the Musheerabad depot was converted into an electric vehicle in 2023. It is now operating under Uppal depot limits, officials said. The pilot project supported the larger TGSRTC electric bus retrofit rollout.

Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy appealed to the public to support eco-friendly transport. Executive Directors Munishekhar, Venkanna, Rajasekhar, and Vijayapushpa attended a review meeting at Bus Bhavan. Representatives of Sai Green Mobility and Kalyani Power Train Limited also participated in the discussions.

Officials said the green push would strengthen sustainable public transport and reduce the city’s carbon footprint in the coming years.
