Hyderabad: Tesla on Tuesday launched its Model Y in India, priced at ₹59.88 lakh, as the company opened its first showroom in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) business district of Mumbai. The showroom, branded as an “Experience Centre,” marks Tesla’s formal entry into the Indian electric vehicle market.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who inaugurated the centre, said Tesla’s arrival signals a shift in India’s EV landscape. “This isn’t just the opening of a showroom it’s a statement that Tesla has arrived in Mumbai, the entrepreneurial capital of India,” Fadnavis said.
Senior Regional Director Isabel Fan briefed the chief minister on Tesla’s future plans and innovation roadmap for India. The showroom featured a partially veiled Model Y, displayed under tight security, with limited public access to the gated complex.
Tesla’s Indian launch pits it directly against luxury EV offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, as well as mass-market players like Tata Motors and Mahindra. The Model Y rear-wheel drive will retail at ₹60 lakh, while the long-range version is priced at ₹68 lakh. By contrast, the Model Y starts at $44,990 in the US and 263,500 yuan in China.
India, the world’s third-largest car market, currently sees electric vehicles make up just 4% of sales. The government aims to push this figure to 30% by 2030 through tax incentives for manufacturers committing to local production. Tesla, so far, has not confirmed any manufacturing plans in India.
Tesla’s launch coincides with Vietnamese automaker Vinfast opening pre-bookings for its electric SUVs, the VF6 and VF7, in India.
