Telangana to support Gulf NRIs, demands voice in Overseas Mobility Bill

Hyderabad: Telangana will fully support its expatriates in Gulf countries, BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said on Thursday. Addressing the Telangana NRI Advisory Committee in Hyderabad, he stated that the government has launched dedicated programs for Gulf NRIs under the Praja Palana initiative. This includes reserved seats in education for their children.

Minister demands state role in mobility bill drafting

At a meeting held at the Manjeera IAS Guest House, the minister discussed the central government’s proposed Overseas Mobility Bill 2025. He insisted that Telangana’s input must be part of the bill due to the state’s large migrant population.

“Earlier, people went abroad only for employment. Now, professionals from various fields are going abroad with better training and skills,” he said. To address diaspora issues, Telangana has set up a dedicated NRI Cell, though foreign affairs fall under central authority.

State offers financial aid to families of deceased Gulf workers

The minister said the government has been providing ₹5 lakh in financial aid to families of Gulf workers who died abroad. This scheme has been in effect since December 7, 2023.

In his Husnabad constituency, the NRI cell has already resolved several cases involving migrants in distress. It did so by coordinating directly with Indian embassy officials.

Training and regulation key to stopping exploitation

However, Ponnam Prabhakar warned that many unskilled workers still fall prey to fake recruitment agents. He called for improved regulation and better training. Programs like those offered by Tom Com Company, he said, help workers secure jobs abroad with fair salaries.

Advisory panel urged to collect local feedback

The minister also asked the Telangana NRI Advisory Committee to visit Gulf-affected districts. He said they should talk to local families and gather suggestions. Their input could help shape stronger state-level support policies for NRIs.
