Telangana offers Rs.1 crore accident insurance to power staff

Hyderabad: In a major boost to the welfare of its electricity workforce, the Telangana government on Tuesday rolled out a comprehensive Rs.1 crore accident insurance scheme covering 51,868 employees across the state. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu hailed the initiative as a landmark move designed to safeguard the families of those who work tirelessly to keep the lights on.

Speaking at a signing ceremony at Praja Bhavan, Bhatti Vikramarka called the scheme a source of personal satisfaction, underscoring the government’s commitment to those who risk their lives daily, especially during natural calamities and emergencies. He stressed that the state’s electricity staff form the backbone of economic progress, often working under hazardous conditions.

“No matter the rank be it a lineman or a CMD every electricity worker has a family relying on them,” he remarked. “An unexpected accident can throw an entire household into chaos. This scheme ensures that no family is left in the lurch should tragedy strike.”

The insurance plan comes at no cost to the employees, Bhatti Vikramarka said, instilling a sense of security and trust between the staff and the government. It also offers additional financial support through marriage and education loans for employees holding SBI accounts, he noted.

Those who suffer permanent disability will be eligible for compensation of up to Rs.80 lakh, while natural death cases will be covered up to Rs.10 lakh. Moreover, the policy extends to four family members, providing a combined cover of up to Rs.20 lakh. The benefits, including ATM and chequebook facilities, are available even on zero-balance accounts.

“This scheme is designed not just for the immediate employee but also to ease the financial burdens of their families,” Bhatti Vikramarka said, highlighting that the initiative spans the entire department, from the junior-most staffer to the top brass.

Looking ahead, he spoke about the state’s plans to ramp up power generation, stressing the importance of an uninterrupted electricity supply. “Electricity is as vital to industry as oxygen is to life,” he observed. “A moment’s disruption can have far-reaching consequences.”

Telangana’s peak power demand has surged to 17,162 MW this year an increase of 2,000 MW over 2023. Yet, thanks to the relentless efforts of the power staff, the state managed to maintain an uninterrupted supply, he said.

In a bid to meet growing demand and embrace sustainability, the government has launched the 2025 New Green Energy Policy, with an ambitious target of generating 20,000 MW of green energy by 2030. Bhatti Vikramarka also pointed to the lack of a dedicated electricity policy over the past decade, which he said had left Telangana lagging behind.

Now, with a structured approach to boosting generation and upgrading supply infrastructure, the state aims to meet at least 75 percent of its power needs without interruption, even during peak demand.

The event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Energy Department CMD Sandeep Kumar Sultania and TRANSCO CMD Krishna Bhaskar, who joined the Deputy Chief Minister in applauding the contributions of the electricity workforce.
