Hyderabad: The Telangana State Council of Higher Education has approved a unified English syllabus for undergraduate courses across all state universities, set for implementation from the 2025–26 academic year.
The decision followed a review meeting on Monday involving heads of English departments and Boards of Studies from government universities. Council Chairman Prof. V. Balakishna Reddy said the new syllabus aims to eliminate inter-university discrepancies and ensure equity, inclusivity, and standardised learning outcomes.
The revised syllabus will incorporate:
‘English with Local Flavour’: Focused on practical language use in work, communication, digital literacy, and creativity
Simplified content: Less volume, more clarity; emphasis on functional skills
Cultural relevance: Telangana history and culture will feature in reading materials
Skill integration: Listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary consolidated into a cohesive curriculum
Digital access: Free, standardised reading PDFs and pronunciation guides via audio clips
Teacher training: TSAT-led orientation sessions covering pedagogy, digital content, and student assessment
Under the National Education Policy 2020 framework, the syllabus will link English proficiency with other subjects and employ phased, outcome-based teaching modules. Approximately 200 pages of reading material will be distributed digitally, with model question papers and audio lessons hosted on the Council’s official website.
The Council said materials were being curated by experienced educators, with a clear focus on accessibility, clarity, and real-world relevance.
