Hyderabad: Telangana posted an all-time high in liquor sales during December 2025, with the state registering ₹5,102 crore in revenue from alcohol sales, according to the Excise Department. This marks the first instance of monthly liquor sales crossing the ₹5,000 crore mark in the state.
New Year, elections drive Telangana record liquor sales
Officials said over ₹350 crore worth of liquor was sold on December 31 alone, coinciding with New Year celebrations. In the last five days of the month, liquor sales totaled ₹1,344 crore.
In comparison, December 2024 recorded ₹3,800 crore in liquor sales, and December 2023 saw ₹4,297 crore. The current figures reflect a ₹1,300 crore increase over the previous year.
Officials attributed the spike in alcohol consumption to the overlapping of Sarpanch elections, Christmas festivities, and New Year celebrations, which led to sustained customer demand across retail outlets.
Excise officials also noted that newly licensed liquor shop owners—who began operations from December 1 under the new policy—reported strong business during their first month. A total of 2,620 liquor shops are currently operating across the state.
The Excise Department, anticipating heavy demand, ensured uninterrupted stock supply throughout the month. The surge in sales has significantly boosted departmental revenue.
Official records also confirm that Telangana generated ₹1,000 crore in liquor sales over the final three days of 2025 alone.
