Telangana sends ordinance on 42% BC reservations in local polls to Governor

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has sent an ordinance to Governor Jishnu Dev Varma seeking formal approval to implement 42 per cent reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in upcoming local body elections.

The Panchayat Raj Department revised Section 285(A) of the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, to reflect the proposed quota expansion. Once the Governor grants assent, the state is expected to issue a notification to operationalise the new reservation structure.

The state Assembly and Legislative Council had earlier passed a bill endorsing the 42 per cent BC quota based on findings from a caste-based socioeconomic survey. A corresponding Government Order (GO) will follow, aligning with the legislative and empirical framework.

Officials said the ordinance was prepared in anticipation of the deadline set by the Telangana High Court, which had asked the government to finalise the BC reservation process before conducting elections. The state cabinet has approved the measure, which is critical to clearing the way for local body polls.

The ordinance is now pending with the Governor’s office.
