Telangana’s journey and struggles: KCR recalls spirit behind BRS formation

Warangal: BRS President and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao delivered an impassioned speech recounting the struggles, sacrifices, and spirit that led to the formation of Telangana and the birth of the BRS party. Speaking at the party’s Silver Jubilee public meeting at Elkathurthy on Saturday, he reminded the people that the fight for Telangana was never about personal power but about the pride and rights of its people.

KCR said that the BRS was born on 27 April 2001 at Jaladrushyam in Hyderabad with a single goal: to achieve statehood for Telangana. “We did not form a party for caste, religion, or positions. It was founded purely for Telangana’s self-respect,” he declared.

He narrated how, during the movement, the then ruling Congress and TDP leaders, obsessed with positions, failed even to utter the word ‘Telangana.’ KCR recalled that TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu went as far as banning the word ‘Telangana’ inside the Assembly. “Telangana was treated as a crime,” he said, reflecting on the humiliation faced by Telangana leaders at the time.

Remembering the tragic history, KCR recounted how, during the 1969 Telangana agitation, the Congress regime under Indira Gandhi had fired upon Telangana youth, killing over 400 innocent sons of the soil. “The villain for Telangana yesterday, today, and always has been the Congress party,” he thundered.

He accused the Congress of repeatedly betraying Telangana — first by forcibly merging it with Andhra Pradesh against public will, then by delaying and diluting promises of a separate state. “After 14 years of deception, after countless sacrifices like Sagara Haaram and Sakala Janula Samme, we achieved Telangana,” he said, invoking memories of the massive public struggles.

KCR recalls BRS formation

KCR paid tributes to those who laid down their lives during the movement and saluted icons like Professor Jayashankar. He recalled how, during the peak of the agitation, he gave a call that if anyone tried to lower the Telangana flag, they should be stoned, highlighting the intensity and passion that propelled the fight.

He described how Telangana, once mocked as backward and barren, was transformed during the BRS era. “We built Telangana into a shining state in just a decade, surprising the entire nation,” KCR said, reminding the people of the awards, achievements, and pride Telangana had earned post-statehood.

Quoting the story of Lord Rama rejecting the golden Lanka to return to Ayodhya, KCR said, “There is no heaven greater than our motherland and mother.” He recounted how he set out alone 25 years ago to liberate Telangana from exploitation, driven by a deep belief that nothing was greater than one’s homeland.

He recalled the humiliations the movement had faced — how many had mocked the pink flag of BRS and belittled the cause. Yet, with the sacrifices of hundreds and the will of millions, Telangana was finally realised.

KCR offered heartfelt tributes to Telangana’s martyrs and the soil of Warangal, which had witnessed the valour of Rani Rudrama Devi, the sacrifices of Sammakka-Sarakka, and the poetry of Bammera Pothana. “With the blessings of the people, we built a Telangana that stunned the world. Now, it is time to once again protect it from being pushed back,” he said.
