Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Monday announced Sankranti holidays for schools in 2026, giving students across the state a week-long break.
According to the official notification, schools will remain closed from January 10 to January 16 for the Sankranti festival. The government said the holidays apply to government, private, aided, residential, and commercial schools.
Officials said the decision will help students and teachers celebrate the festival with their families. They added that the break will not affect the academic calendar.
Kanuma’s optional Sankranti holidays, schools reopen on January 17
The state government also announced January 16 as an optional holiday to mark Kanuma. The festival holds special importance for the farming community. People across rural Telangana observe traditional celebrations on that day.
Meanwhile, the government clarified that schools will reopen on January 17. Classes will resume as per the schedule after the holidays.
Following the announcement, students welcomed the extended break. Parents have begun planning to bring hostel students home for the festival.
Education department officials said schools will function normally once classes resume.
