Telangana gears up for municipal polls with ward delimitation drive

Hyderabad: Telangana is setting the stage for its upcoming municipal polls, with the government fast-tracking the crucial process of ward delimitation across several urban local bodies. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department on Tuesday released a detailed schedule for this exercise, aiming to wrap it up by 21 June.

Principal Secretary Sridevi has instructed district collectors and municipal officials to complete the redrawing of wards within the given timeframe. The drive covers 30 municipalities and municipal corporations out of the total 43 across the state. However, the 13 urban local bodies already merged into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits will not be subjected to this fresh exercise, as they have already been integrated into the metropolitan boundaries.

Interestingly, seven civic bodies—Warangal, Khammam, Siddipet, Achampet, Kothur, Nakrekal, and Jadcherla—have been left out of this round of delimitation since their elected councils are still in tenure. Officials say the ward reorganisation in these areas will only take place after the current councils complete their term.

According to sources, no boundary changes are planned for local bodies where no new villages have been merged or existing wards separated. Such areas will continue with their current ward structures without any adjustments.
