Telangana finalises ZPTC, MPTC seat count ahead of local body polls

Hyderabad: The Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department on Tuesday finalised the number of ZPTC and MPTC seats in Telangana following territorial reorganisation, marking the first step toward conducting local body elections.

The state now has 566 ZPTC seats and 5,773 MPTC seats, down by 44 from 5,817 in 2019. The count was finalised after MPTC delimitation was completed on July 12.

The number of village panchayats stands at 12,760, marginally down from 12,769 in 2019. Village ward numbers have also decreased to 1,12,694 from 1,13,136.

The revisions follow a legal amendment mandating a minimum of five MPTC seats per mandal, correcting earlier disparities where some mandals had only two or three based on population. Under current norms, one MPTC seat corresponds to a population of 3,500, and every Mandal Parishad President and Vice-President must have at least two MPTCs each to support their functioning.

The reorganisation also reflects urban administrative changes, with 71 village panchayats merged into GHMC, municipal corporations, and municipalities, particularly in Khammam, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Mulugu, Ranga Reddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.

Once the government issues clarity on BC reservations, the Panchayat Raj department will formally notify the reservation pattern and submit details to the State Election Commission for poll scheduling.
