Hyderabad: Telangana is set to extend the Centre’s ‘One Nation-One Student ID’ initiative to Intermediate students from the 2025–26 academic year by assigning each a Personal Education Number (PEN).
School Education Department has largely implemented PENs at the school level. Secretary Yogita Rana has now directed the Intermediate Education Department to integrate PENs into student nominal rolls, hall tickets, and mark memos.
The PEN system is designed to follow a student’s academic journey across different schools and years. At the same time, the education department has made it mandatory to enter full student details into the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) for Classes 1 through Intermediate in the 2025–26 academic year.
But there’s a gap. According to data from Samagra Shiksha, UDISE records for Intermediate students are still incomplete. Details for 94,806 students haven’t been uploaded yet—a lapse that could drag down Telangana’s Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in national reports. The Education Department has issued instructions to resolve this by ensuring full UDISE registration.
Separately, the government will deploy facial recognition-based attendance (FRS) for 1.5 lakh students in 430 government junior colleges. Intermediate Education Director Krishna Aditya has issued work orders to RNIT AI Solutions for implementation within two weeks.
