Telangana accelerates clean mobility push with new EV incentives

Hyderabad: Telangana is accelerating its clean mobility shift with new incentives, scrappage reforms, and EV targets, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said at the Global Telangana Rising Summit on Monday.

The minister said the state aims to become a “zero-emission mobility compass by 2047” and called green transport “the foundation for Telangana’s future growth.”

According to him, the state’s 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees increased electric vehicle adoption from 0.60% in 2023 to 1.39% in 2025. A total of 1.59 lakh EV owners received benefits worth ₹806.85 crore.

Scrappage policy and EV auto permissions take effect

Telangana launched its vehicle scrappage policy in 2024, resulting in the removal of 5,400 vehicles from the roads. The state also offered green tax exemptions under this policy. Tenders are now open for 15 automated testing stations in the first phase, with plans for 37 across the state.

To improve last-mile transport, the government approved 10,000 CNG, 10,000 LPG, and 25,000 retrofit EV autos. At the same time, it cancelled permits for petrol and diesel autos on the Outer Ring Road.

The government has also proposed that all departments purchase at least 25% electric vehicles each year. Plans are underway to expand support infrastructure, including charging stations, battery recycling, electric buses, and AI-based mobility systems.
