Hyderabad: Rising floodwaters from upstream tributaries have forced authorities at the Srisailam reservoir to open five gates, releasing over 2 lakh cusecs into the Krishna River.
Heavy rainfall in Karnataka and Maharashtra has swollen the Krishna and its tributaries, including the Tungabhadra and Jurala. In response, floodgates at upstream projects have been opened, significantly raising inflows into Srisailam.
As of the latest update, inflows reached 2,32,290 cusecs. To manage the surge, Srisailam engineers lifted five crest gates—two more than yesterday—to a height of 10 feet. Discharge through the gates, along with right and left-bank hydel units, has reached 2,01,743 cusecs.
The reservoir is now at 883 feet against its full reservoir level of 885 feet. Officials said they are monitoring the situation hourly and are prepared to open an additional gate if inflows continue to rise.
