HYDERABAD: In a distressing incident in Mahabubnagar, a man refused to attend his father’s funeral out of anger that the family house was registered in his sister’s name.
According to reports, 80-year-old Manikyarao, a native of Kyathanpalli in Dameragidda mandal of Narayanpet district, had retired as Assistant Director in the Survey and Land Records Department. He is survived by a son, Girish, and two daughters. After the death of his wife, Manikyarao distributed his property—giving 15 acres of farmland and ₹60 lakh to his son Girish. He later registered the family house located in Padmavati Colony, Mahabubnagar, in the name of his elder daughter Rajanandini, who comes from an economically weaker background.
Following this, Manikyarao had been living in Mahabubnagar under the care of his daughters. He passed away shortly after midnight on Tuesday due to illness.
When his daughters informed Girish, who lives in Hyderabad, about the demise, he responded that he would not attend the funeral because the house had been registered in his sister’s name. Despite repeated pleas from his sisters to at least attend the last rites and a proposal to divide the house equally, he remained adamant. Even extended family members failed to convince him.
With no option left, the younger daughter, Raghunandini, performed the funeral rites as advised by elders. The son’s behaviour—prioritising property over the final farewell to his father—has drawn widespread criticism.
