Hyderabad: A son allegedly burned his elderly mother alive in Kotagiri mandal of Nizamabad district on Saturday following a drunken quarrel over money, police said.
The incident triggered shock in the mandal headquarters. According to police, the accused had developed an addiction to alcohol over the past few months. He reportedly returned home intoxicated every day and picked quarrels with his mother.
On Saturday, he again came home in an inebriated condition and demanded money to drink, police said. When his mother refused, the argument intensified. In a fit of rage, he allegedly decided to kill her.

Police said the accused threw old clothes on his mother and set them on fire inside the house. Despite her screams, he did not attempt to rescue her, according to officials. The flames engulfed the elderly woman within minutes.
She died on the spot due to severe burn injuries, police said. Neighbours alerted the Kotagiri police after noticing the commotion. Officers reached the scene immediately and took custody of the body.
The body was shifted for postmortem examination. Meanwhile, police detained the accused son in connection with the crime.
Investigators are examining whether he acted solely under the influence of alcohol or if other factors led to the offence. A case was registered, and further investigation was underway.
