Hyderabad: The SI Krishnakanth memo issue ignited strong protests at the DGP office on Thursday after Ayyappa devotees and BJYM activists challenged the departmental action taken against the Kanchanbagh SI. Police officials issued a memo alleging that he violated uniform rules by wearing the Ayyappa mala during duty hours. Hindu groups condemned the move and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
SI Krishnakanth memo issue draws large crowds to DGP office
BJYM workers and Ayyappa devotees reached the DGP office in unexpectedly large numbers. They attempted to march inside to press their demand, prompting the police to tighten security around the premises. Senior officers had already deployed barricades after receiving early alerts about the mobilisation.
Police teams stopped the crowd at the entrance, which created brief tension. Protesters questioned the rule that restricted an officer from wearing the Ayyappa mala. They said the memo insulted Hindu sentiments and ignored the faith of thousands of devotees. Several leaders warned that the order damaged trust between the people and the department.
Protesters urged senior officers to withdraw the memo without delay. They warned that the State would witness bigger protests if the department failed to act. Devotees also pointed out that the memo sent a wrong message during the Mandala season, when many people observe strict rituals.
A second protest formed near the South East Zone office after devotees learned that no senior officers were available to meet them. They raised the same demand and vowed to continue the demonstrations until the memo was cancelled.
Police teams assured the protesters that they would convey the concerns to top officials for further action.
