Delhi, January 7: Intense cold conditions and dense fog continue to grip northern India, severely affecting daily life in 16 states.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that visibility dropped to zero in parts of Punjab, Jammu, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, leading to widespread disruptions in transportation.
Several flights were delayed, with airlines like SpiceJet cautioning passengers about possible delays at airports in Delhi, Srinagar, Varanasi, Amritsar, and Jammu. Train services also faced significant delays as foggy conditions affected rail schedules.
In Uttar Pradesh, the severe cold has resulted in 25 deaths over the past 48 hours, with 10 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours alone. Meanwhile, Bihar’s Katihar, Purnia, and 20 other districts are under a cold wave alert, with authorities warning residents to take precautions.
Rajasthan is also experiencing the effects of icy winds, with a cold wave alert issued for six districts over the next three days. Schools in several areas have been closed due to extreme weather conditions.
In Jammu and Kashmir, Gulmarg and Sonamarg received approximately 2 feet of snowfall. Key routes, including the Mughal Road, Srinagar-Leh Road, Semthan-Kishtwar Road, and Gurez Highway, remain closed. According to the IMD, no fresh snowfall is expected in the region until 10 January.
Himachal Pradesh is facing a dual weather alert for snowfall and rain in multiple districts. The cold wave and precipitation are expected to further exacerbate challenges in the hill state.
Authorities in affected states continue to monitor the situation closely, urging people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel where possible.
