Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to support the state’s large-scale education reforms. He specifically sought funding for the construction of 105 Young India Integrated Residential Schools across Telangana.
During a meeting at the Finance Ministry in New Delhi, the Chief Minister requested permission to raise funds through a special state-level corporation. He also asked the Centre to exempt this expenditure from the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) limits.
Additionally, he appealed for a restructuring of existing loans. Revanth Reddy said high-interest borrowings by the previous administration had placed a significant repayment burden on the state.
Telangana seeks ₹30,000 crore support for education infrastructure
The Chief Minister informed the Union Minister that Telangana had launched reforms to provide corporate-style education. These initiatives primarily target students from BC, SC, ST, and minority communities, who make up around 90% of the population.
He stated that construction had already begun for four Young India Schools. Tenders for the remaining schools had also been finalized. Each school will accommodate 2,560 students, bringing the total capacity across the state to 2.7 lakh.
According to the Chief Minister, the project will cost ₹21,000 crore. In addition, the state plans to spend ₹9,000 crore to upgrade labs and infrastructure in junior, degree, technical, and higher education institutions.
Revanth Reddy stressed that education is a long-term investment in human capital. He explained that exempting this spending from the FRBM ceiling would help Telangana complete the project without breaching financial limits.
The Finance Minister reportedly responded positively to his requests.
Congress MPs Dr Mallu Ravi, Porika Balaram Nayak, Suresh Shetkar, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, along with State Finance Principal Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania and Central Projects Secretary Gaurav Uppal, attended the meeting.
