Retreat–2026 valedictory session at SICA focuses on prison reforms

Hyderabad: The Retreat–2026 valedictory session of the Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services Department was held on Wednesday at SICA, Chanchalguda, with Special Chief Secretary (Home) C. V. Anand attending as chief guest.

Director General of Prisons Soumya Mishra received the chief guest and delivered the welcome address. During the session, prison superintendents presented brief reports on administration, focusing on security, rehabilitation, de-addiction and inmate welfare. The presentations outlined ongoing reform-oriented practices within the department.

Addressing the gathering, C. V. Anand referred to his administrative and policing experience. He cited initiatives including the Krushi Venkateshwar Rao bank fraud case, the development of Lake Police units and the launch of the SHE App aimed at improving women’s safety. He also recalled his tenure as Hyderabad Police Commissioner, noting the appointment of the first woman Station House Officer in the city police’s 175-year history.

He commended the Telangana Prisons Department for organising the programme. In particular, he noted the establishment of de-addiction centres in prisons and suggested extending such facilities to all district jails. He also called for strengthening prison security through the use of modern technologies, including drones.

Further, he stressed the need to improve family counselling systems and expand video conferencing facilities across prisons. He said such measures would support both administrative efficiency and inmate welfare. He also referred to the principles of “Cure, Pure and Rare” and urged steps towards creating environmentally sustainable and carbon-neutral prison spaces.

In her concluding remarks, Soumya Mishra thanked the chief guest for his guidance and said the department would continue to focus on reform, security and humane correctional practices. She also acknowledged the participation of officers in the programme.

Senior officials, including Inspector General of Prisons N. Murali Babu, DIG (Hyderabad Range) Dr. D. Srinivas and DIG (Warangal Range) M. Sampath, attended the event.
